Godric

Well, as said in the previous post, I've been catching up on the past seasons from True Blood. To say the least I actually started watching the show during season 4. And of course following up with season 5 and 6. One thing I'd like to point out is a character in the show, a 2,000 year old vampire, named Godric. Whom happens to be Eric's maker, along with Nora. Well. Ok. I didn't know who he was since he appeared as a subconscious to both Eric and Nora, asking my brother since he knew a lot more of the show than I did. He stated that he was a powerful vampire that committed suicide and he made Eric into a vampire.

A vampire committing suicide? Sounds intriguing. And so I felt like watching the first 3 seasons from the get go. He only appeared a little after a few episodes in season 2 and to say the least he's my favorite vampire character. And the only vampire that was "human" so to speak, or felt the need to co exist with the human race rather than be the stereotypical vampire, which was a flesh eating, sadistic vampire. Did my research like any fangirl would lol and found out that Godric's early childhood and teen years were filled with being a slave, later to find himself to a vampire. Godric's maker was a child molester and abused Godric until he turned him into a vampire at the age of 16. His maker taught him all that he could until Godric was able to fend for himself. Later to result in Godric killing his own maker (which is rare in True Blood for makers and their progenies are united). Well, anyways, Godric managed to be the only vampire to break free and kill his own maker. What I really love about him is how magical he is. Sounds cheesy. His bloodline consisted in his first progeny, Eric, then Nora. Eric of course made his own, Pam, and Pam made Tara. Eric couldn't stress the importance to Pam on making a vampire herself if he were to die. Because the blood twines to Godric in the end. And of course, Godric killing himself, there wouldn't be a bloodline if Eric or Pam didn't make their own vampires.

Godric's tattoos are very symbolic.

-The necklace tattoo is traditionally a symbol of protection in many Anglo-Saxon cultures. It's generally given to those who are higher-ranking in the given society, including chiefs, hunters, and warriors

-The tattoo on his left arm is an ancient Gallish symbol for water

-The spine looks like a sea serpent, representing death and rebirth the brand in his shoulder appears to suggest that he was a slave before he was turned

Godric ultimately wanted to die, probably because he was depressed or he finally redeemed himself from all the fatalities he was caused in his 2,000 years and now knew the meaning of life. On his last moments, he has an amazing conversation with Sookie regarding love, God, forgiveness, and fear. Godric is almost appalled that Sookie starts to mourn over him before the sun rising, finding great solace. I could literally feel Godric being repentant of his crimes against human actions and he is now full of goodness.

On that note, he doesn't burn like any other vampire. All vampires in the show burn and get crispy and then turn into a huge fire ball. Godric, on the other hand, burned this beautiful blue flame and then disintegrated. His face did not appear that he was in pain but of a relaxed, calm one. I took note of this and thought that perhaps this was because he was so good, like an angel, and his death was peaceful and beautiful. He did state to Sookie before meeting the sun that he was full of joy.

  1. Thank you for explaining those tattoos. Given his age, I was really interested in learning more about his origins. He had a beautiful soul, and was my favourite too. Shame he had to die because I think he could have added a more balanced view of vampires (for all the good it did in the end - there's a special place in hell waiting for Pastor Steve). But I could understand not wanting to live for an eternity. Interesting show. Only came across it by accident. Like how it delves into human vs vampire morality, as well as all the Supernaturals that keep turning up. Plus, I like the old fashioned type of vamps, such as Bill :).
